Background
After radically changing my life in 2018, I immersed myself in self-care to get myself back on track with the life I aspired to live.
In the process of self-discovery, I learned as a middle-aged mom and teacher, life gets pretty hectic, and I would put myself aside for others.
Although I felt isolated at times, I knew I wasn’t alone in feeling overwhelmed with spending my days caring for others while not knowing I was sacrificing my peace of mind.
When we spend our days caring for others, whether our children, students, or loved ones, we must schedule a time to care for ourselves.
We give back to our community, work tirelessly to provide for our families, and do everything possible to make everyone else’s lives a little easier.
It’s a selfless life, and it’s easy to forget that we must care for ourselves too.
Self-Care
Self-care is often seen as a luxury that we only do when we have spare time.
But the truth is, self-care is essential, especially when we are middle-aged moms and teachers who give so much of ourselves to others.
We can’t pour from an empty cup, and if we don’t care for ourselves, we won’t be able to give our best to ourselves and those around us.
Finding Your Self-Care Practice
Self-care looks different for everyone, but finding what works for you is essential.
It could be taking a yoga class, reading a book, taking a bubble bath, or simply sitting silently for a few minutes each day.
Whatever it is, it’s essential to make time for it. I started with a short yoga practice each morning for twenty minutes. This transformed into hot yoga at a studio three times a week for an hour.
This past year, I have dedicated one day to living digitally free, journaling, and spending time outdoors.
When we care for ourselves, we’re not only caring for our physical, mental, and emotional health. We are coming back stronger to give to those we love.
- We’re giving ourselves the time and space to process our thoughts, feelings, and emotions.
- We’re allowing ourselves to rest and recharge to show up as our best selves for those around us.
Choosing Self-Care Over Guilt
As a mom and a teacher, I know how challenging it is to find time for self-care. Although my babies have four legs and fur, there was a time when my girls needed full-time care and attention.
We often feel guilty taking time for ourselves, as if we’re somehow neglecting our responsibilities.
But the truth is, self-care is a responsibility too. It’s a responsibility to ourselves, our families, and our students.
To be the best moms and teachers, we must prioritize our well-being.
- We must permit ourselves to take a break, rest, and recharge.
- We must be kind to ourselves and show ourselves the same compassion and understanding we give others.
So to all the middle-aged moms and teachers out there, I urge you to prioritize self-care.
Take a few minutes each day to do something that nourishes your soul.
Whether it’s a long walk in nature, a hot cup of tea, or a phone call with a friend, make time for yourself. You deserve it, and those around you will benefit from it too.
Personal Growth Strategies
A self-love journal is powerful for personal growth, insightful guidance, and self-compassion.
Writing down our thoughts, feelings, and experiences helps us better understand ourselves, our values, and our goals.
It also provides us with actionable steps to live our best lives.
Self-Love Journal
The act of journaling is a form of self-reflection that allows us to explore our thoughts and feelings in a safe and non-judgmental way.
We can release our negative thoughts from our minds and gain a clearer perspective by putting our thoughts on paper.
It becomes a sacred space to express our fears, hopes, and dreams without fear of judgment or criticism.
Identifying Patterns Holding Us Back
Journaling as self-care helps us identify patterns and themes holding us back from living our best lives.
Once we are clear on the patterns, we are better prepared to take actionable steps to change them and move forward with a renewed sense of purpose by recognizing them.
Inspirational Guidance
Furthermore, a self-love journal is a source of insightful guidance.
It’s a place to ask ourselves difficult questions and explore the answers in a safe and supportive environment.
When we allow ourselves to be vulnerable on the page, we open ourselves up to new insights and revelations that can guide us toward a more fulfilling life.
Cultivate Self-Compassion
Finally, a self-love journal helps us cultivate self-compassion.
So often, we are our worst critics, but by writing down our thoughts and feelings in a journal, we learn to treat ourselves with the kindness and compassion we deserve.
It’s an opportunity to offer ourselves the same support and encouragement we provide to others.
Set Intentions
To get the most out of a self-love journal, it’s essential to be intentional about the practice.
Set aside time each day or week to write and approach the practice with curiosity and openness.
Be honest with yourself and allow yourself to be vulnerable on the page.
Remember that the journal is a safe and supportive space, and there are no right or wrong answers.
We can better understand ourselves and our lives by exploring our thoughts, feelings, and experiences on the page. It’s a place to identify patterns, gain new insights, and cultivate self-compassion.
So, take the time to start a self-love journal today and watch as it transforms your life in ways you never thought possible.
